Our Kitchen Remodel is Complete!!!

I am THRILLED to announce that our Kitchen Remodel is complete!
As I mentioned in “Making His House Our Home,” I originally assisted in designing this home 6 years ago when my husband, who was single at the time, elected to build a rustic style home where him and a couple of his roommates would live in “bachelorhood” for the next several years. Little did either one of us know, we would eventually end up getting married and living in the home together!
Soon after we got married we discussed possibly selling the home and building in a neighborhood with a better school district…but because we love the area and do not yet have kids, we decided to stay in the house for the next 3-4 years….I agreed, under one condition of course…that we do a total home make over!
For the last year or so I have been hard at work converting my husband’s bachelor pad into a stylish, more sophisticated home for the two of us. Our latest and most substantial project was our kitchen remodel. In my recent post, “A Little Design Inspiration for Your Wednesday,” I introduced a few of my ideas and inspiration photos. I have been dreaming of white kitchen cabinets, Absolute Black honed granite counter tops and a backsplash filled with White Carrara marble, similar to this kitchen….
I am happy to finally have my dream kitchen become a reality! So with no further ado, here are the photos of our kitchen before….
And here is our kitchen today!
Not only did we paint our cabinets off white, we also added glass uppers to extend the cabinets to the ceiling (of course one of the upper lights went out right before I took the pictures…go figure). I am now on a mission to find the perfect decor for these fun little cabinets. I would love to incorporate the blue-ish turquoise color that used I in the adjacent living room…
We replaced the tiled counter tops with honed Absolute Black granite. I am pleased that I selected honed rather than polished as it gives it a more casual feel…
The tile backsplash has been replaced with a 1/2″ x 1/2″ White Carrara marble which is polished, so when the under cabinet lighting hits it just right, it’s as if it sparkles!
We removed the stained shutter over the kitchen window and replaced it with a fabric shade which was my Friday night D.I.Y project……I’ll tell you more about it later this week!
As you can see from the before pictures, this bar was about 12″ taller before the remodel. We had it dropped to a more comfortable level and added a trash drawer (which I love!), 2 pot and pan drawers and wine storage…which in return added more counter top space. We also added 2 clear glass lantern pendant lights over the serving bar
We selected these satin nickel drawer pulls for the drawers…
And this satin nickel hardware for the cabinet doors…
Thanks for visiting today…I will keep you updated on what I find for the glass uppers…I have a feeling that might turn into a huge project of it’s own…!

Emily, Your Kitchen looks AMAZING! I love the nice clean look it has. You did such a great job. The pendant lights make a huge statement. It’s amazing how with just some paint and a change on the hardware how the cabinets look brand new. Can’t wait to see it in person.

WOW!!! You did an amazing job!! What a huge difference that made. I love all the clean lines. And adding the upper cabinets makes the whole kitchen look larger. Great choice on the honed granite.

Your kitchen turned out GORGEOUS! I love everything you did, down to the shape of the cabinets. I’ve never seen lights like in your upper cabinets- such a great idea and way to use the space. The shade you chose is also fabulous! I can’t wait to see how you did it so maybe I can try it in our kitchen:)
Emily
Thanks Megan! Stay tuned to see how I made the shades…I think you’ll be surprised to know how quick and easy it was!
Another Bachelor Pad Makeover!

Tony owns the most beautiful Mediterranean style home here in Dallas, so I was thrilled to take on this project! I immediately went to his home to take pictures of the space….and that’s when it hit me…this was going to be yet another Bachelor Pad Makeover! [...]

i absolutely love this kitchen!
i would like to add some glass upper cabinets to my kitchen.
did you build the glass uppers or have them professionally installed?
how did you prepare & paint the cabinets?
Emily
You know, I actually thought about taking on this project myslef, but decided against it as I would have been in WAY over my head! So I used a remodel company here in Dallas. They sanded all of the cabinets and primed them before painting. Let me know if you are in the Dallas area and want their number, I’d be happy to give it to you! Good luck!

Emily
Amazing! You should totally send it in to Young House Love. I’m sure they’ll “swoon.” (their word).
Emily
Thank you! I actually sent them the link several weeks ago…

i really admire what you did here…we have the same cabinet style in our new place..they are standard looking cabinets. We were thinking of buying just cabinet doors and painting the cabinet boxes ourselves…
Now after seeing yours…i wonder if it would be less pricier to get a remodel company to paint them as they are now instead and just spend money on upper cabinets. Although our ceiling height is 10 feet!.
Any suggestions? What color paint did you use…? How much did the painting remodel cost?
If you want you can email me the response: jen@madebygirl.com.
Thanks!

LOVE this kitchen! Do you mind sharing what paint colors you used for the walls and cabinets? I love the color palette.
Emily
Thank you! I was just explaining to another reader that we thought the paint color was Behr’s Dolphin Fin….but when we needed touch up paint for the kitchen remodel Dolphin Fin ended up much lighter! So….I have no idea what the color is, but my best advice would be to start with Dolphin Fin and go a shade or two darker.
Same goes for the cabinets….they just matched our tim color, so we don’t have a specific color. However, I can tell you that Amazing Grace by Kwal is VERY close to this color…not too stark.

Your kitchen remodel is beautiful….I am actually moving to Dallas soon and am wondering if you painted the cabinets yourself or could recommend the contractor you used to do it. Our new home has a recently remodeled kitchen but I am thinking of having the cabinets painted and of course, have to re-build all of my sources now that I’ll be in a new city. Looking forward to following your blog!
Emily
Hey Susie!
Thanks so much! I actually did not paint the cabinets myself…we used DSS Remodeling. The owner’s name is Daniel and he was great to work with!
Good luck with the big move!!

Your house is to die for. I was looking at your rooms and you have a few things I gotta have! I love your living room lamps and the animal print pillows on your bed. Would you be willing to share where you found them? I love gourd lamps but I have tried Robert Abbey and they looked a little too modern/retro-ish for my getup. Also I have to tell you that I live in FL and I love those octopus panel prints too. I pondered getting them but instead I purchased a pair of framed indigo blue sealife prints from wendover art. Every room you feature on your blog is so tasteful and pretty. Thanks for sharing.
Natalie
Wow! I just found your blog through Emily A. Clark and your kitchen transformation has totally inspired me! Our current kitchen looks extremely similar to your “before” and seeing your “after” has totally convinced me to paint our cabinets white. Thanks and keep up the amazing transformations!
dayka@ life +style
Emily, your transformation is truly jaw-dropping! I also love that it really proves that you don’t have to drop $40,000 to have a kitchen worthy of it’s own magazine layout! I just found your blog but will reading more to learn more about you and your beautiful style. Happy New Year!

Hi Emily!
I am absolutely blown away by what you have done! Our kitchen is so similar to yours (layout included) and I have perusing blogs to find inspiration. I stumbled on to yours, and I am speechless. I would love to duplicate it!
Where did you find your kitchen hardware? They are just what I have been looking for! Also, do you know the name of the stain that you used for the kitchen floor? Did you ever post on how the make the kitchen shade? I am dying to know! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Thanks for sharing, and congrats on a job well done!
Stephanie
Emily Hewett
Thanks Stephanie! The stain on the floor is Antique Brown and we got the cabinet hardware at Home Depot. I did do a post on my shade here:

Annie
Hi! I found you off of Emily’s site! Love your kitchen! Where did you get your faucet? Make and model? I am redoing our kitchen as well and I love yours! Also, I see you have the soap dispenser, is it leaking on your granite? I hear that is sometimes a problem.
Liz
I love, love, love it! We’re doing our kitchen next month and this was pretty similar to what I had in mind. I decided to get that fabric before seeing this and now it’s a must! I was going to do the “roman shade” look using mini blinds but this is so much easier. Would you mind telling me where you got the light fixture? I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere. I don’t usually like this style but I really like this one. Thanks
Emily Hewett
Hey Liz!
I actually got the light fixtures at Overstock.com…and for a great price! Good luck with your kitchen!

Anne
Your kitchen is beautiful, and is the primary inspiration for my kitchen in the house we’re building. I have a question regarding the kitchen cabinets…do you know who the maker of the cabinets is? I love the style!
Thanks!
Emily Hewett
Hi Anne,
I am so sorry, I have no idea who made the cabinets…however you can get Shaker style door panels with just about any cabinet manufacturer.
Thanks!
Emily
Rebecca
Emily,
Luckily I stumbled across your blog tonight! Isn’t it funny how things like that seem to just happen…I am in the middle of remodeling the kitchen in a home I just purchased in the DFW area. I just had my cabs painted creamy white, I am thinking of going with an antiqued Black Pearl countertop an was unsure what backsplash I wanted until I say yours…I really love it!!! Would you mind sharing where you purchased the marble backsplash with me? Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
Blessings!
Emily Hewett
Hey Rebecca,
We used a 1/2″x1/2″ White Carrara Marble for our backsplash. We purchased it at Floor & Decor over off of 635 & 35 for about $15/sf.
Good luck with your remodel!

Your kitchen is my inspiration kitchen. I love it, it’s so beautiful. Was originally going to go with a dark brown finish for our cabinets, but after seeing your kitchen remodel, we’ve decided to paint them white. Love it!!
