Before & After: Cantrell Kitchen Remodel Reveal

Cantrell Kitchen 4

I‘m so excited to finally reveal the remodel that I posted about last week! A great big thank you to the home owner, Jamie, for giving me free reign on this design, and to her husband, Shawn, for saying to her, “It’s whatever you want, babe…” during our initial consultation! (I swear he totally said that…and when he did, it was like the skies parted and the angels started singing…….ahhhhhhh!!!)

Ok, onward…

When I first stepped into the space, this is what I saw…

Dark oak cabinets, a rust colored travertine floor and dated wall paper. And no offense to the builder, but what is up with that “serving bar?” It totally closes off the kitchen from the adjacent living room. And the counter top overhang was no more than 3″, making it virtually impossible to comfortably incorporate barstools for dining.

And did I mention the miniature island in the center of the kitchen? You can’t see it because it is blocked by the serving bar, but it was literally 2′x3′ and offered zero work space.

Here is a “before” picture of the breakfast area…

And here is the new kitchen design from the very same angle…

My favorite part of this remodel has to be the custom island.

By removing the “serving bar,” as well as the island, we were able to build a 10′ x 5′ custom island with built-in counter height dining and a freak load of storage. It’s the perfect place for their boys to sit and do homework while Jamie prepares meals.

Removing the serving bar also allows the kitchen to feel more open to the living room (which also has a new design in the works, btw!)…I know that Jamie & Shawn will really enjoy this aspect of the kitchen when entertaining friends and family.

Below is a shot from the opposite end of the kitchen…

We replaced all of the cabinet fronts with paint grade wood and had all of the cabinets painted white.

We also added glass uppers, island pendants and additional canned lighting as well as the most beautiful taupe/grey solid surface counter top. We opted out of marble and granite as we wanted to keep the counter top free of pattern and movement.

The new wood floors were a must… We extended the existing living room floors into the kitchen to merge the space.

And of course, the herringbone pattern backsplash styled with fresh white subway tiles …. Love.

And finally, the breakfast area…

Custom drapes, woven shades and a lively graphic print rug.

Such a fun project! Can’t wait to show you their living room remodel in the next several weeks!

Fantastic job!!! Just wondering, when you say you will not share sources…does that include the paint color name of the grey walls? We are painting our home soon and I am trying to find just the right shade, and this seems perfect. I would love if I could even get it in private?
    Keep up the great work!

  • It looks amazing! I am so glad you got rid of the bar and went with an island. I see those bars in so many homes and was just recently trying to talk someone into removing hers when she was doing a kitchen remodel (to no avail, sigh).

This is beautiful. Is the wood floor real hard wood or another material? I’ve heard that real hard wood scratches very easily. I am looking to have new flooring installed, but have young kids and don’t want my floor to look scratched the moment it is in.

  • Gorgeous! Love a bright, white kitchen. Light fixtures are beautiful as well. I actually bought the semi-flush version for my foyer.

My kitchen looks VERY similar to the ‘before’ but we have cherry-stained maple cabinets. I couldn’t believe it was the same kitchen and gave me such inspiration. I’ve always wanted white and thought we’d just paint the cabinets but I love, love, love what you did with the island. And its so great to see what can be done with my almost identical layout. I know you stated you can’t share sources but are you able to tell me what the white paint color is? Its perfect-not too bright or too yellow. Beautiful!

I keep coming back to this kitchen…love, love, love it!! I want to do the same thing with our kitchen but am confused as to how “white” to go on the cabinets. Can you please share the color for the cabinets and the paint color on the walls?

    May 03, 2013
  • This is an amazing kitchen…we are building a new house and have been searching for a white/gray kitchen, and this is one is such a great reference! You said the counter tops are not marble or granite; what are they? We have been considering concrete but are open to other options, too! Thanks for your help!

LOVE this kitchen! We are building a custom home, and I keep coming back to this photo for kitchen inspiration. I’m wondering what your thoughts are about mixing metal finishes when it comes to door/cabinet hardware and lighting. It’s hard to tell for certain from the picture, but it looks as if you have mixed finishes in this kitchen, and it looks awesome!

    July 01, 2013
    • Yes! We highly recommend mixing metals! Love that!

Love it! When you extended the hardwoods into the kitchen did the living room ones have to be Sanded so they could all be restrained? Or we’re they able to match the kitchen to the living room without restraining?

    December 30, 2013
  • Tiffany

Love it! When you added the hardwoods were you able to easily match to the living room or did you have to sand and restain so they all match? I’m wanting to have my cabinets painted white but I have stone/tile flooring so want hardwoods added. Thanks

    December 30, 2013
    • We did not have to sand the floors…they were able to match them easily
